USA Swimming International Team Trials: Day 1 Finals Heat Sheets

The USA Swimming International Team Trials continued with the Day 1 finals Tuesday from the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

The events on tap are the women’s 200 butterfly, men’s 200 butterfly, women’s 100 freestyle, men’s 100 freestyle and the final heat of the women’s 800 freestyle and men’s 1500 free.

The women’s 800 free will see Katie Ledecky headline the final heat, along with Leah Smith, Katie Grimes and Bella Sims.

The men’s 1500 free will feature Bobby Finke, Will Gallant and Charlie Clark.

In the women’s 200 butterfly, Hali Flickinger turned in a dominant performance in the event, taking the top seed with a swim of 2:07.75. Flickinger, swimming for Sun Devil Aquatics, was nearly two seconds ahead of the rest of the field and will have a middle lane for tonight’s final. Charlotte Hook took the second seed at the USA Swimming International Team Trials in 2:09.51 to hold off Texas’ Emma Sticklen (2:09.71) by two tenths of a second. Olympian Regan Smith took the fourth seed in 2:09.83, just one hundredth ahead of Michigan’s Olivia Carter (2:09.84), the 2021 NCAA champion.

In the men’s 200 butterfly, Cal’s Trenton Julian took the top seed after touching the wall in 1:54.34. Olympian Zach Harting took the second spot in 1:55.83, followed by fellow Olympian Chase Kalisz (1:56.04) at the USA Swimming International Team Trials. Dart’s Luca Urlando took the fourth seed, touching the wall in 1:56.32, just ahead of Alexander Colson (1:56.50).

In the women’s 100 freestyle packed with seven Olympians, Natalie Hinds took the top seed in 53.77. She was the lone swimmer in the field to break 54 seconds. Olympic teammate Torri Huske took the second seed in 54.16, tied with fellow Olympian Claire Curzan, who also touched in 54.16. Both made the Olympic team in the 100 butterfly. Mallory Comerford made her return to the elite at the USA Swimming International Team Trials. After having a tough Olympic Trials, she was back to form with a 54.18 to take the fourth seed. Olympic gold medalist Abbey Weitzeil took the fifth seed in 54.19 with just three hundredths of a second between her and the second seed. Olympian Erika Brown took the sixth seed (54.27) ahead of fellow Olympians Olivia Smoliga (54.32) and Kate Douglass (54.58).

In the men’s 100 freestyle, Olympic gold medalist Caeleb Dressel touched out NCAA champion Brooks Curry to win the final heat and take the top seed heading into tonight’s final in 48.12, not his best time but solid for a prelims performance at the USA Swimming International Team Trials. Olympian Ryan Held took he second seed ahead of another Olympian, Drew Kibler (48..24). Curry, who made the Tokyo Olympics as a relay swimmer, took the fourth seed in 48.36. Florida’s Kieran Smith took the fifth seed (48.50) ahead of Hunter Armstrong (48.55), Olympic medalist Zach Apple (48.57) and Justin Ress (48.73) to round out the finalists for the USA Swimming International Team Trials final.
