USA Swimming Announces New Time Standards for TYR Pro Swim Series

The year 2022 has not begun yet, but we should already be looking ahead to the first meets of the season. In the United States, the competitive season kicks off just two weeks into the year with the TYR Pro Swim Series. The first stop will be at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, running from Wednesday, Jan. 12 through Saturday, Jan. 15. Several veteran members of the U.S. Olympic team are likely to be in attendance along with high-school-aged athletes, while most elite college swimmers typically do not race long course in January as they focus on their upcoming conference and national championships.

In advance of the meet, USA Swimming has posted a list of updated time standards, with qualification available in both short course yards and long course meters. The qualifying times are identical to those required for the Winter Junior Nationals held in December in Greensboro, N.C., and Austin, Texas.

The TYR Pro Swim Series meets provide the primary opportunities for top American swimmers to tune up for the year’s major national and international competitions. This year, with the World Championship Trials scheduled for late April in Greensboro and the World Championships set for late May in Fukuoka, Japan, there will be three Pro Swim Series stops prior to those Trials. After Knoxville in January, USA Swimming will hold a meet in Des Moines, Iowa, from March 2-5, and then the March 30-April 2 meet will take place in San Antonio. A summer edition of the Pro Swim Series will take place in Mission Viejo, California.

Pro Swim Series meets do not typically see record-setting swims as athletes point towards upcoming championship races, but sometimes, swimmers will record special swims. In 2018, superstar Katie Ledecky set the world record in the 1500 freestyle at a Pro Swim Series meet in Indianapolis, and that record still stands.
