USA Diving Wins Five Medals at World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships

USA divers won five medals – two gold, two silver and one bronze – at the World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships in Rio de Janeiro from November 24-December 1.

Josh Sollenberger (Fort Wayne, Ind./Indiana University) won gold on 1-meter in the boys’ 16-18 age group. The U.S. won a pair of silver medals in girls’ 1-meter diving, with Lanie Gutch (Orlando, Fla./University of North Carolina) taking second in the 16-18 age group and Kayla Jensen (Spring, Texas) finishing second in the 14-15 age group. Joshua Hedberg (Noblesville, Ind.) won bronze on platform in 16-18 boys’ competition. Hedberg, Jensen, Sollenberger and Anna Lemkin (Woodside, Calif./Stanford University) won gold in the mixed 3-meter and platform team event.

USA Diving also had several other individual finalists.

Jensen also advanced to the 14-15 girls’ 3-meter final and finished ninth. Ava Jolley (Davidson, N.C.) joined Jensen in the 1-meter and placed 12th. Callie Fox (Mission Viejo, Calif.) took fourth in 14-15 platform competition.

In 14-15 boys’ competition, Cristiano Garcia (Springfield, Va.) was fourth on 3-meter and sixth on 1-meter. Mik Schwickert (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was fifth on 1-meter and seventh on 3-meter, and Jake Mannarino (Orlando, Fla.) placed ninth on platform.


Avery Giese
(San Clemente, Calif./University of Kentucky) joined Gutch in the 16-18 girls’ 1-meter final and finished ninth for USA Diving. Giese also qualified for the 3-meter final and placed 12th, with Taylor Fox (Mission Viejo, Calif./University of Texas) finishing fifth in that event. Juliet Radich (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) placed 11th in 16-18 girls’ platform competition.

Luke Sitz
 (Prosper, Texas/SMU) qualified for the finals in both 16-18 boys’ springboard events. He finished fifth on 3-meter and sixth on 1-meter. Misha Andriyuk (San Jose, Calif./Stanford University) joined Hedberg in the 16-18 boys’ platform final and placed 10th.
Sitz and Sollenberger teamed up to finish fifth in boys’ synchronized 3-meter, and Gutch and Lemkin were fourth in girls’ synchronized platform.
Many of the World Junior Championships team members will now head to Bloomington, Ind., for USA Diving’s Winter National Championships, which take place December 11-15.More Diving News
