US Open Friday Night Times Report: Curzan, Martinez Enter Top Five World Rankings; Baker Beats Stacked Virtual Field
The 2020 socially distanced virtual US Open continued Friday night from nine different sites across the United States as many of the best American swimmers got their first taste of long course racing in many months.
Sarasota, San Antonio, Greensboro, and Huntsville had two overall winners on the night while Indianapolis and Richmond each had one winner.
Sarasota’s Emma Weyant won the 400 IM in her home pool with a 4:40.84 as she put herself seventh in the world for 2020, while Florida junior Kieran Smith took the 200 free with a 1:47.29.
San Antonio had a notable pair of winners with Texas freshmen Carson Foster and Anna Elendt winning the 400 IM (4:16.51) and 100 breast (1:07.50) as Elendt moved to second fastest German in 2020 while Foster put himself at number 14 in the world.
The swim of the day came from Claire Curzan in the 100 butterfly in Greensboro with a 56.61 as she put herself second in the world rankings for 2020. She was out under world record pace at the 50 and seems to keep improving every time she dives into the pool. Andrew Wilson also won the 100 breast from Greensboro with a 59.58 to put himself ninth in the world.
From Huntsville, Guatemala native Luis Martinez won the 100 fly to put himself fourth in the world rankings with a 51.50. Jack Aikins won the 100 back from Alabama as well with a 54.59.
Kathleen Baker won the 100 back from Indy over Regan Smith and Phoebe Bacon in a virtual race as those three sit atop the world rankings in 2020.
Virginia senior Paige Madden won the 200 free from Richmond at 1:57.64.
