US Open Day 2 Prelims: David Curtiss, Gabi Albiero Sprint To Top Seeds in 50 Free
The 2022 US Open continued on Thursday with the first full day of competition from Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Day 2 prelims session comprised of six events, the women’s and men’s 400 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle.
Women’s 400 Free
The next edition of Katie Ledecky vs. Summer McIntosh is here in the women’s 400 free. Ledecky, after winning the 800 free on Wednesday, took the top seed comfortably in 4:02.51.
McIntosh, Canada’s teen sensation finished with the second seed in 4:06.68. Both swimmers could have plenty left in the tank for an exciting final.
Michaela Mattes took the third seed (4:12.49), followed by Erin Gemmell (4:12.57) and Emma Weyant (4:13.59).
US Open Men’s 400 Free
Brazil’s Guilherme Costa swam to the top spot in the men’s 400 freestyle, touching the wall in 3:52.13.
NC State’s Ross Dant took the second spot in 3:52.56, followed by Brazil’s Stephen Steverink (3:52.78) and U.S. national teamers Zane Grothe (3:53.97) and Jake Mitchell (3:54.30).
Women’s 200 IM
Sun Devil Aquatics’ Regan Smith swam to the top seeding the women 200 IM, finishing in 2:11.66 to barely hold off fellow national teamer Leah Hayes (2:11.91), setting up what appears to be a fast and closely contested final.
Camille Spink took the third seed in 2:13.96, followed by Zoe Dixon (2:16.59) of Florida, Miranda Tucker (2:17.00) and Gemmell, swimming back-to-back events (2:17.03).
US Open Men’s 200 IM
Texas A&M’s Baylor Nelson, fresh off a strong performance in the annual Art Adamson Invitational, surged to the top seed in the 200 IM. He finished 2:00.38.
Two swimmers were right on his heels as Daniel Diehl finished in 2:00.50 and Olympic gold medalist Chase Kalisz was third in 2:00.68.
Women’s 50 Free
Louisville’s Gabi Albiero, fresh off her strong performance in the Fina World Cup stop in Indianapolis, took the top seed in the 50 free, touching the wall in 25.26.
Kaitlyn Johnson took the second seed in 25.44, followed by Camille Spink, in her second event of the day (25.45), Lily King (25.50) and Beata Nelson (25.64).
US Open Men’s 50 Free
NC State’s David Curtiss closed out the prelims session with a fast 50 free, touched the wall in 22.07 to take the top seed heading into finals.
Brazil’s Victor Alcara was right behind at 22.10, followed by Florida’s Losh Liendo (22.23) and Ali Khalafalla (22.34). Justin Ress made the finals in seventh (22.48).
