US Olympic Trials: Rothrock Breaks 1:00 100 Fly For First Time at Wave I, Sauickie, Stewart Lead Heats

15-year-old Addie Sauickie of the Sarasota Sharks got the day started with a 4:15.96 in the 400 freestyle to take the top seed in tonight’s finals as she was just off her seed of 4:15.5. Sauickie is just outside the top 100 all-time in the 15-16 age group as a 4:14.55 sits 100th.

Sauickie and Ohio State’s Sally Tafuto were the only swimmers to get under the Wave I Olympic Trials cut as the Buckeye is second for finals with a 4:16.77 after coming with a 4:16.0 on the heat sheet. Tafuto and Sauickie were next to each other in the heats this morning and will occupy the middle two lanes in tonight’s final.

Last night’s 200 free champ Malia Rausch of Austin Swim Club is seeded third with a 4:17.26 as she came in as the second seed on the psych sheet. Swim Atlanta’s Abigail McCulloh (4:17.97) and South Florida’s Mary Smutny (4:18.35) placed fourth and fifth as Smutny came from the non-seeded heat to make the final. Jillian Barczyk of Georgia is sixth at 4:18.36.

Tennessee’s Trude Rothrock swam one of just two sub-minute 100 butterflys on Sunday morning at the Wave I Trials in Omaha as she was a 59.64, setting a new best time in the process. She and Nikki Venema of Tide Swimming were the only to break 1:00 as she was a 59.89, just off her seed of 59.86.

Virginia’s Lexi Cuomo, who made the final at NCAAs, dropped three tenths on her seed to a 1:00.10 as she is knocking on the door to break 1:00 and could do so tonight in the middle of the final. Cuomo was out in lane eight in her heat, finishing second to Venema, while fourth seed Mia Kragh swam a 1:00.11 from one of the non-seeded heats.

15-year-old Grey Davis of Cavalier Aquatics swam a 1:00.51 as she added on her best of 1:00.2 which puts her 51st all-time in the 15-16 age group. She is behind Lizzy Cook in today’s results summary as the Cal commit is fifth at 1:00.35.
