US Olympic Trials: Joshua Brown Pulls a Chris Swanson & Runs Down Lloyd; Kristin Cornish Takes 1500 Free Title to Close Wave I
17-year-old Kristin Cornish of Badger Swim Club swam a smart race to take the 1500 freestyle win to close the Wave I Olympic Trials with a 16:42.63, lowering three seconds on her lifetime best as the Johns Hopkins commit will race the 1500 again at Wave II, along with Audrey Coffey of Nebraska (16:49.09).
Coffey will join her Cornhusker teammate Autumn Haebig at Wave II as they will make the short one hour drive from Lincoln to race second time in Wave II. Haebig made Wave II from this meet in the 200 free and 100 back. Coffey added on her seed of 16:48.7 as she was in third place for the front half but stayed patient and built her way through the race, flipping second at the 650 and leaving Juli Arzave behind her.
Arzave was the early leader in the race after coming in as the top seed but she fell off the pace and finished fifth overall at 17:03.38.
Wisconsin’s Alivia Lindorfer (16:55.85) finished in third ahead of 18-year-old Stanford commit Aurora Roghair (16:57.40) of Iowa Flyers.

Highlander’s Joshua Brown unleashed a stellar last 50 in the final of the 1500 freestyle to close the Wave I Olympic Trials as the Notre Dame commit closed in a 28.97 to run down Owen Lloyd (15:36.24) of NC State, who closed in 30.26. The race looked to be locked up when Lloyd passed Tennessee’s Jake Narvid at the 1200 mark who tried to run away from the field in lane eight.
The pace was too hot for Narvid as Lloyd passed him and the race was on between him and Brown. The pair turned two seconds behind Lloyd at the 1400 as Brown kicked it into high gear, giving fans flashbacks of Penn’s Chris Swanson winning the NCAA title in the 1650 in similar fashion in 2016. Joshua Brown lowered his own best of 15:36.2 as he will swim that again at Wave II next week along with Lloyd, who dropped four seconds on his best.
Narvid was third at 15:38.69, dropping nearly four full seconds on his best.
Sandpipers’ Brice Barrieault (15:40.05) finished fourth overall from an earlier heat as Navy’s Luke Johnson, who was second in the 800 free and will advance to Wave II Olympic Trials, was fifth at 15:44.30.
