US Olympic Gold Medalists Hit Open Water

From USA Today: Olympic gold medalists Brooke Bennett and Tom Dolan are moving from the pool to salt water this weekend. Both will compete in the 10-kilometer division of the USS Open Water Championships on Saturday in the Indian River and bay between Indialantic and Melbourne, Fla. Dolan says the race will be a change of pace, “and not just because it’s about 70 degrees warmer” in Florida than in Ann Arbor, Mich., where he has been training. His coach, Rick Curl, has teased Dolan about the hazards of leaving the pool – “He keeps telling me there are shark and alligator warnings out”- and succeeded in planting just a seed of doubt. “I figure the distance will be no problem; I do 10,000 meters in training lots,” says Dolan. “But not being able to see what’s underneath me, that’s going to be different.” More than 200 swimmers in various classes will compete in 1-, 3-, 10-, and 25-kilometer races.
