UNLV, Arizona State Swimming and Diving Teams Split Dual Meet

LAS VEGAS – The UNLV and Arizona State swimming and diving teams split their dual meet Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas, with the ASU women and UNLV men taking home the victories.

The Arizona State women’s swim and dive team (1-5) notched its first victory of the season on Saturday, coming in dominant fashion as it took down UNLV at Buchanan Natatorium in Las Vegas, Nev. On the flip side, the ASU men (2-4) suffered defeat at the hands of the No. 16 Rebels.

The women won by a final score of 188-111, while the men fell 185-109.

Women’s swimming kick-started the afternoon with a victory in the 200 medley relay (1:43.34), led by a team of sophomore Ingibjorg Jonsdottir, freshman Jorie Caneta, seniors Alex Popa and Melanie Busch.

It concluded the meet the same way it began, this time winning the 400 freestyle relay (3:25.30). Swimming the final race included senior Juanita Barretto, Jonsdottir, sophomore Alysha Bush, and Busch who combined for the 1st-place finish.

A total of six women’s swimmers combined to win eight individual races on Saturday:

It wasn’t just the swimmers who had success, though, but the women’s divers as well. Freshman Mara Aiacoboae (278.78) and senior Hailey Casper (303.68) swept the 3-meter dive and 1-meter dive, respectively.

On the men’s side, freshman Christian Lorenz won the 200 breaststroke (2:03.72) after tying ASU junior teammate Thibaut Capitaine for 1st-place in the 100 breaststroke (56.87), beating Boris Kulizhnikov of UNLV by .04 of a second.

Another ASU freshman, Juhan Hong, took 1st in the 1000 freestyle (9:36.09), which resulted in another thrilling finish. Hong touched the pad .04 of a second ahead of UNLV’s Matt Roe en route to Arizona State combining to win three of the four distance events against UNLV.

Saturday marked the final dual meet of 2014 for the Sun Devils. While swimming breaks from competition until January, diving prepares itself for the USA Diving Winter Nationals taking place in Columbus, Ohio from Dec. 16-21.

The UNLV men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams split a dual meet on Saturday afternoon with Arizona State at Buchanan Natatorium. On the men’s side, the Rebels claimed a 185-109 victory, while ASU posted a 188-111 win in the women’s meet.

Four Rebels were double-event winners in the men’s meet, starting with Lucas James who won both diving events. He posted first place scores of 280.28 on the 1-meter and 344.18 on the 3-meter. Next was Henrique Machado,sweeping the back events in times of 49.49 (100) and 1:49.43 (200). Joe Riggert won a pair of free events, the 500 free in 4:34.64 and the 200 free in 1:40.75. Balint Batka was the fourth double-event winner, taking the 100 fly in 49.53 and the 200 fly in 1:48.32.

Other wins came from Or Sabatier in the 100 free (45.45) and Dillon Virva in the 50 free (20.44), part of a 1-2-3 sweep in the event. UNLV placed first in both relays as well. The 200 medley relay team of Machado, Tom Paco-Pedroni, Virva and Sabatier won with a time of 1:30.50. The final event, the 400 free relay, saw Machado, Forrest Beesley, Virva and Sabatier post a winning time of 3:00.95.

Jessica Wong paced the Rebel women with wins in the 200 back (2:00.60) and the 200 IM (2:06.37). Michelle Troup placed first in the 100 free in 50.87, and Stephanie Samudro won the 100 fly in 56.27.

UNLV returns to action on Dec. 13-15 when it hosts the UNLV Winter Invitational at Buchanan Natatorium.
