University of Minnesota Defeats Division II Tampa in First 2024 Dual Meet

Collegiate swimming competition returned in earnest Friday, and with numerous top teams seeking warmer climates during the holiday break from school, the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers were in Florida to face Division II power University of Tampa and cruised to wins. Minnesota’s women went up 209 to 52 while the men won 183 to 89.

For Minnesota, freshmen Morgan Thomas and Jade Roghair each won a pair of freestyle events, with Thomas wining the 50 free (23.62) and 100 free (50.95) while Roghair shining in the 200 free (1:53.79) and 500 free (5:03.25). In the longest freestyle event, Katie McCarthy topped the 1000 (10:09.75). The other double winner for Minnesota was veteran Megan Van Berkom, who finished just five hundredths behind McCarthy in the 500 free before cruising in the 200 butterfly (2:01.60) and 400 IM (4:21.67).

Minnesota’s Ava Yablonski won the 100 backstroke (56.93), and Ava Goodno won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.17). Other winners for the Gopher women included Faith Johnson (200 back, 2:03.70), Ava Gustafson (200 breast, 2:24.00) and Claire Reinke (100 fly, 56.22). Paula Rodriguez Rivero, Goodno, Thomas and Hannah Cornishwent 1:45.33 for a 200 medley relay win while Minnesota’s Cornish, Thomas, Mina Kalevic and Yablonski beat the field by almost seven seconds in the 400 free relay, clocking 3:29.66.

The men’s meet saw William Christenson comfortably claim first place in the 1000 free (9:19.80) and 400 IM (3:54.33). Bar Solveychik finished ahead of the field in the 200 free (1:39.30) and 500 free (4:27.36), and Josh Johnston was the man in the breaststroke events, winning the 100 (57.11) and 200 (2:04.58). Kaiser Neverman cruised to wins in the 200 fly (1:47.57) and 100 free (44.57).

The other Minnesota individual winner was Ian Steffen in the 100 back (50.47) while the Gophers’ Casey Stowe, Neverman, Davide Maria Harabagiu and Connor Groya touched out Tampa for the win in the 200 medley relay, 1:29.72 to 1:29.84. Lovro Serdarevic, Neverman, Harabagiu and Groya won the 400 free relay (3:02.32). For Tampa, Blake Moran topped the 50 free (20.55) while Santi Corredor won the 200 back (1:49.14) and Adrian Aguilar won the 100 fly (49.06) by eight hundredths over Harabagiu.
