Rising Stars Help United States Break World Junior Record in 400 Freestyle Relay at Junior Pan Pacs
United States Breaks World Junior Record in 400 Freestyle Relay at Junior Pan Pacs
The United States closed out the third night of the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii with a dominant performance in the men’s 400-meter freestyle relay, as Team USA established a world junior record. The quartet of Thomas Heilman, Henry McFadden, Daniel Diehl and Kaii Winkler produced a swim of 3:15.79 to clip the former standard by .01. The United States set the old record in 2019 at 3:15.80.
Heilman got the United States off to a strong start, as he packaged a split of 49.14. That effort arrived after Heilman set a National Age Group record (15-16) in the 100 butterfly earlier in the session. Heilman went 51.98 in the fly, but clearly had enough time to recover and give the U.S. a spark on the front of their relay.
Following the 15-year-old Heilman into the water was McFadden, who turned in a split of 49.04 and exchanged with Diehl, who popped a 48.66 outing on the third leg. At that point, the United States was within striking distance of the world junior record and Winkler did his part by splitting 48.95. The United States finished more than two seconds ahead of Australia, which won silver in 3:18.06, largely behind the 48.43 leadoff leg of Flynn Southam.
The final day of action will unfold on Saturday with the 2oo individual medley, 50 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, women’s 1500 freestyle and men’s 800 freestyle.
