Wolfpack Men, Cavalier Women Win In Tri-Meet With North Carolina

Due to the inclement weather last weekend, Virginia travelled to Chapel Hill on Friday to take on North Carolina and NC State in a double dual.

The No. 8 Wolfpack men defeated the No. 19 Tar Heels 186-112 and the No. 21 Cavaliers 222-78. The Tar Heels beat the Cavaliers 201.50-98.50. On the women’s side, No. 3 Virginia beat No. 12 NC State 154.50-145.50 and No. 14 North Carolina 178-122. NC State beat North Carolina 162-138.

The meet began with the NC State women (1:38.99) just out touching Virginia in the women’s 200 medley relay. The Wolfpack men (1:27.05) won the men’s event.

Virginia’s Leah Smith touched first in the women’s 1000 (9:34.21), and soon after took first in the 200 free (1:46.84). She won her third individual event by winning the 500 free (4:43.74).

NC State’s Anton Ipsen took first in the men’s 1000 (9:01.78) with teammate Adam Linker taking second (9:10.01). Ipsen also took first in the 500 free (4:24.96), followed again by Linker (4:27.98).

The Wolfpack also went 1-2 in the men’s 200 free, led by Soren Dahl (1:36.79) and Simonas Bilis (1:37.27). Dahl (1:49.05) later led the Wolfpack’s sweep in the men’s 200 IM.

Virginia’s Courtney Bartholomew took first in the women’s 100 back (52.64) and 200 back (1:54.84), while NC State’s Hennessey Stuart grabbed first in both the men’s 100 back (47.40) and 200 back (1:43.91)

Virgina’s Laura Simon won the women’s 100 breast (1:00.90) and 200 breast (2:12.96). Wolfpack’s Derek Hren took first in the men’s 100 breast (54.41), just out touching Virginia’s Yannick Kaesser (54.46)

Virginia’s Jen Marrkand touched first in the women’s 200 fly (1:57.67) with teammate Kaitlin Jones taking second (1:59.56). Jones later won the 200 IM (2:00.32).

NC State swept the women’s 50 free, led by Ashlyn Koletic (22.62), Rike Bonnema (22.78), and Courtney Caldwell (22.97), while teammate Natalie Labonge won the women’s 100 free (49.49).

Only two people went under the 20 second barrier in the men’s 50 free, won by Bilis (19.62) and Ryan Held (19.95). Held went on to dominate the 100 free (43.44), winning by well over a second.

North Carolina went 1-2 in the men’s 200 breast, led by Michael McBryan (2:01.02). The Tar Heels also went 1-2 in the men’s 100 fly, led by Sam Lewis (47.41). Hellen Moffitt won the women’s 100 fly (53.33), and Christian McCurdy took the men’s 200 fly (1:46.16) for NC State.

North Carolina’s Elissa Dawson won the women’s 3m (353.75) while NC State’s Rachel Mumma won the women’s 1m (312.95). The Tar Heel’s Jack Nyquist won the men’s 3m diving event (399.45) with teammate Ozzie Moyer taking second (353.15). Moyer also won the men’s 1m (310.70).

The meet concluded with both the NC State’s women (3:18.52) and men (2:54.93) winning the 400 free relay.

North Carolina will travel up the road to take on Duke on Saturday, and NC State will compete next in the Carolina College Invite on Feb. 5-7. The Virginia divers compete in two diving invitationals on Feb. 5 and 6, and the Cavalier swimmers return to the pool for the ACC Championships.
