UNC Tar Heels Pick Up Another 2023 Verbal From Virginia State Champion Ava Muzzy
NEW COMMIT: The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill has received another verbal commitment for the fall of 2023 from U.S. Open qualifier Ava Muzzy of Roanoke, Va.
Her older sister, Emma Muzzy, is currently a senior at NC State where she is an ACC champion.
She will join Maren Conze of Garrett Park, Maryland, as a member of the Tar Heels’ Class of 2027.
She told Swimming World:
“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at The University of North Carolina! Thank you to my family, coaches, and teammates for getting me to this point. Go Heels”
Muzzy, who does her club swimming with Virginia Gators under head coach Ned Skinner, most recently placed 14th in the 200m breast and 15th in the 100m breast at the Speedo Summer East Championships after placing fourth in the 200m IM at Virginia LCM Seniors.
Muzzy has also been tabbed the Virginia Swimming Age Group Swimmer of the Year four times.
Her best times include:
- 100 breast – 1:02.91
- 200 breast – 2:17.42
- 200 IM – 2:01.11
- 400 IM – 4:18.34
Currently a junior at Cave Spring High School, Muzzy is already a four-time individual Virginia Class 3 State Championship finalist. She won the 200 IM and 500 free as a sophomore while taking fourth in the 100 free and fifth in the 100 back during her freshman season.
Even with just under two years of club swimming still to go before suiting up for the Tar Heels, Muzzy is a huge get for UNC. She would’ve scored in the B-final of the 400 IM and C-final of the 200 IM at the 2021 ACC Championships.
