NEW COMMIT: The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill has scored a new verbal commitment for the fall of 2022 from sprinter Tyler Roberton of Largo, Fla.

He will join Patrick Sleater and Tanner Jones as a member of the Tar Heels’ Class of 2026.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am extremely excited to announce my commitment to swim for the University of North Carolina. I am looking forward to furthering my athletic and academic future at Chapel Hill. I’d like to thank my friends and teammates who have supported me through the years, and my coaches who have helped me pursue my athletic goals. Most importantly, I’d like to thank my family for believing in me throughout this process, encouraging me and helping make this dream come true!!!”

Roberton, who does his club swimming with Tampa Bay Aquatics, is a Junior National qualifier who placed ninth in the 100 free at the Florida Spring Championships in 2019. In Summer 2019, he finaled in a pair of events at Gainesville Sectionals before going on to take 22nd in the 100m and 200m free at Greensboro Futures.

His best times include:

  • 50 free – 20.66
  • 100 free – 44.76
  • 200 free – 1:37.52
  • 100 fly – 51.17

Currently a junior at Berkeley Prep, Roberton is a four-time individual Florida 1A State Championship finalist. He grabbed silver in both the 100 free and 200 free as a junior while taking ninth in the 200 free and 14th in the 500 free during his sophomore season.

Roberton will add valuable sprint freestyle depth both individually and on relays when he arrives on campus at the start of the 2022-23 season. He would’ve been their fifth-fastest 200 freestyler last season under head coach Mark Gangloff.
