U.S. Open Qualifier Tanner Jones Verbally Commits to UNC Tar Heels’ Class of 2026
NEW COMMIT: The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill has received their first verbal commitment for the fall of 2022 from U.S. Open qualifier Tanner Jones of Logan Township, N.J.
He told Swimming World:
“I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to further my academic and swimming career at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. I would like to thank my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for helping and believing in me to get to this point. I chose UNC because it felt like home being on campus, and the coaches and team already made me feel apart of the Tar Heel family. Go Heels!!!”
A talented distance freestyler who owns the U.S. Open cut in the mile, Jones does his club swimming with Greater Philadelphia Aquatic Club. He achieved 100% best times at the TPIT Christmas Invite in December where he won the mile and placed sixth in both the 500 and 1000.
In Summer 2019, he finished seventh in the 1500m free and ninth in the 800m free at the Middle Atlantic LCM Senior Championships.
His best times include:
- 200 free – 1:43.76
- 500 free – 4:33.75
- 1000 free – 9:26.40
- 1650 free – 15:34.40
- 200 IM – 1:57.40
- 400 IM – 4:09.39
- 200 fly – 1:57.82
Currently a junior at Gloucester Catholic High School, Jones placed fifth in the 500 free and 13th in the 200 free as a sophomore at the New Jersey Meet of Champions.
Jones will add valuable distance freestyle depth when he suits up for the Tar Heels as a member of the Class of 2026. He would’ve been their third-fastest miler last season, and he’s just on the brink of scoring range in that event at the ACC Championships.
