U.S. Open Qualifier Matthew Wolfle Hands 2026 Pledge To In-State Hokies

NEW COMMIT: U.S. Open qualifier Matthew Wolfle of Richmond, Virginia, has verbally committed to his in-state Hokies. The breaststroker/IMer will arrive at Virginia Tech in Fall 2026.

He told Swimming World:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Virginia Tech! I would like to thank my friends, family, and coaches for supporting me. I would also like to thank Coach Sergio and Coach Albert for giving me this opportunity. GO HOKIES!!!”

Wolfle does his club swimming with Nova of Virginia Aquatics and earned three best times at Juniors East earlier this month, placing 14th in the 400 IM, 21st in the 200 breast and 23rd in the 200 IM.

This past summer, he won the 200m breast and was the 200m IM runner-up at Virginia Long Course Seniors before going on to take fourth in the 400m IM at NCSA Summer Championships,

His best times include:

  • 100 breast – 55.70
  • 200 breast – 1:59.10
  • 200 IM – 1:48.39
  • 400 IM – 3:53.11

Currently a junior at James River High School, Wolfle placed second in the 200 IM and third in the 100 breast at the 2024 Virginia Class 5 State Championships. He finished 10th in the 500 free at the Class 6A State Championships as a freshman in 2023.

The Hokies placed third at the 2024 ACC Championships and ninth at the 2024 NCAA Championships.
