U.S. Olympic Trials: USA Swimming Names Coaching Staff For Tokyo Games
The makeup of the coaching staff for Team USA was a discussion point throughout the United States Olympic Trials, and now we know the identities of the individuals who will assist head coaches Dave Durden (men) and Greg Meehan (women) at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. USA Swimming announced the names on Sunday night, just after the last events of Trials.
Selected to the staff were Gregg Troy, Anthony Nesty, Peter Andrew, Teri McKeever, Todd DeSorbo, Bob Bowman, Jack Bauerle and Ray Looze. The open-water coach, which was previously announced, is Catherine Kase.
Bauerle’s athletes starred from the opening event, where Chase Kalisz and Jay Litherland represented the Athens Bullodgs with a one-two finish in the 400-meter individual medley. Kalisz also qualified in the 200 medley and Bauerle also guided Andrew Wilson (100 breaststroke/200 breaststroke), Olivia Smoliga (400 freestyle relay), Natalie Hinds (400 freestyle relay) and Nic Fink (200 breaststroke) onto the American roster bound for Japan.
Troy and Nesty guided their athletes – all with University of Florida ties – to a sweep of the men’s freestyle events, as Caeleb Dressel (50/100), Kieran Smith (200/400) and Bobby Finke (800/1500) managed doubles. Andrew is the father and coach to Michael Andrew, who will represent the United States in the 50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley. Meanwhile, McKeever guided Abbey Weitzeil (50 free/100 free) and Katie McLaughin (800 free relay) onto the Tokyo roster.
DeSorbo, whose University of Virginia women’s squad won the NCAA title last March, has three athletes on the team in Paige Madden (400 free/800 free relay), Alex Walsh (200 individual medley), Kate Douglass (200 IM) and Catie Deloof (400 free relay). The longtime coach of Michael Phelps, Bowman placed Hali Flickinger (400 IM/200 butterfly) and Allison Schmitt (200 free/400 free relay/800 free relay) on the team while Looze is the mentor to Lilly King (100 breaststroke/200 breaststroke), Annie Lazor (200 breast), Blake Pieroni (400 free relay), Michael Brinegar (800 free/1500 free) and Zach Apple (100 free/400 free relay/800 free relay).
