U.S. Olympic Trials: Speedy Men’ s 100 Freestyle Final Will Conclude Massive Day 5 Finals Session (Heat Sheet)

In the busiest finals session of the entire U.S. Olympic Trials, Olympic berths in five events will be awarded Wednesday evening at Lucas Oil Stadium while there will also be three additional semifinals. Final events include the women’s and men’s 100 freestyle as session bookends, with the men’s 200 butterfly, women’s 1500 freestyle and men’s 200 breaststroke in between.

Torri Huske holds the top seed for the women’s 100 free final, but she has a who’s who of U.S. women’s sprinters surrounding here, with Gretchen WalshKate DouglassSimone Manuel and Abbey Weitzeil considered the favorites to join her on the Olympic team. Then, in the men’s 200 fly, Luca Urlando and Thomas Heilman have emerged as favorites with their 1:54 performances in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Katie Ledecky has not lost a 1500 freestyle in more than 12 years, and no one expects that to change in the Trials final. Katie Grimes, meanwhile, is favored to add another spot on the U.S. team in the 1500 free. She was the silver medalist in the event at the 2022 World Championships. Matt Fallon could challenge the American record in the men’s 200 breast while AJ Pouch is the second seed after best times in both prelims and semifinals. Veteran Nic Fink cannot be discounted.

Finally, in the men’s 100 free, Caeleb Dressel will try to officially complete his comeback by qualifying for his third Olympic team. Simply repeating his semifinal time of 47.53 should certainly do the trick for claiming a relay spot, but Jack Alexy and Chris Guiliano are considered the favorites for the individual spots on the team.

Additionally, the session will include semifinals of the women’s 200 fly, men’s 200 back and women’s 200 breast. The top seeds out of prelims in those events were Alex ShackellJack Aikins and Douglass, respectively.

Alexy looks good. I guess Caleb’s best bet is the 100m Fly? Certainly hope he qualifies in that.
