U.S. Olympic Trials Poll: Who Qualifies for the Paris Games in the Men’s 200 IM

Over the next two weeks, Swimming World will run occasional polls revolving around specific events at the United States Olympic Trials in Indianapolis. The first event featured is the men’s 200 individual medley, where several athletes are positioned to make a run at invitations to the Paris Games.

Earlier this year, Carson Foster was the silver medalist in the 200 IM at the World Championships in Doha, finishing behind Canadian Finlay Knox. Last summer, Foster was fifth in the event at the World Champs, while Team USA teammate Shaine Casas was the fourth-place finisher and just off the podium. Veteran Chase Kalisz is another leading contender, ranking 10th in the world heading into Trials.

Whoever represents the United States will have the task of facing France’s Leon Marchand, the reigning world champion in the event, and China’s Wang Shun, the reigning Olympic champion.

So, who are your two American picks to qualify for Paris in the men’s 200 IM? Vote in the poll below.

How about some articles on the Australian Olympic Trials that start in less than a week? Afterall we did beat the US at the last World Championships where both countries sent their strongest teams!

We sent a “B” team to worlds. For sure a few A swimmers, but the team was nothing like what the olympic team is going to look like. Imagine you all will have a few different swimmers too..

Not the last 2024 World Championships. Both countries sent B Teams. I’m talking about 2023.

Obviously you missed the statement released by World Aquatics naming the US as the team of the meet at Fukuoka

I’m just going by the measures used by Every country in the World except the US when it suits them, that a medal table counts Golds first then the other medals if there’s a tie on Golds.
USA are pretty thin skinned at times. Especially when a nation one twelfth their population beats them!

World Aquatics decides the winning team by points, not medals at all. I’m an Aussie, but that’s always how I determine who wins too. It’s the fairest way, and rewards the whole team, not just the stars. And the US may have a much larger population than us, but unlike us, their Olympic athletes get no funding from the government. I am old enough to remember how it was for us before we won the right to host the 2000 Olympics, and our government started pouring money into Olympic sports, particularly swimming. Without the government funding I doubt that we would be the swimming powerhouse that we are. It scares me to think just how strong the American team might be if they were receiving, per capita, the same level of government funding that our government provides our Olympians.

Except ofcourse we don’t have the bountiful of their Collegiate system and consequently need government funding to counteract that fact! Plus the Huge sponsorship potential their athletes have in comparison to ours!
As always we ‘punch far above our weight’!
