U.S. Nationals: Kasia Wasick and Matt King Headline Prelims of 50 Freestyle

During International Swimming League action and at the recently concluded World Championships, Kasia Wasick put her tremendous speed on display. So, it wasn’t surprising to see the Polish star top the heats in the 50-meter freestyle during the final session of prelims at the United States National Championships in Irvine, California.

Racing in the last heat, Wasick, the silver medalist in the event at Worlds, turned in the quickest time of the morning when she touched the wall in 24.57. Wasick was followed by the 24.65 of Gretchen Walsh, who also raced in the eighth and final heat. Also cracking the 25-second barrier was Team USA veteran Abbey Weitzeil, who registered a swim of 24.97. Taking the fourth slot was Gabi Albiero, who checked in at 25.02.

In men’s competition, Matt King maintained the momentum he generated earlier in the week when he shared the national title in the 100 freestyle with Zach Apple. King popped the only sub-22 marker when he covered his lap in 21.95, which was comfortably ahead of the 22.12 by Adam Chaney for the second seed in the final. In the third spot was Jack Dolan, who touched in 22.14. World Champs silver medalist Michael Andrew also moved on.
