U.S. International Team Trials: Caeleb Dressel Downs U.S. Open Record in 50 Fly

The math was tantalizingly simple in the 50 butterfly at U.S. International Team Trials Wednesday night.

Two Olympians. One spot at Worlds. One fast but thrilling race.

Caeleb Dressel and Michael Andrew duked it out, Dressel coming out on top by just .03 seconds. Both swimmers were under the U.S. Open record.

Dressel got to the wall first in 22.84. He holds the American record in the event at 22.35 from Worlds in Gwangju, South Korea, in 2019. His swim Wednesday downed the 13-year-old U.S. Open mark set by Bryan Lundquist in Indianapolis in 2009.

Dressel was fourth in the event at Worlds in 2017 and won gold in 2019. Dressel’s time is the second-fastest in the world in 2022, only world record holder Nicholas Santos of Brazil (22.73) going faster. Dressel opted for the 50 fly by scratching out of the 200 free on Wednesday.

Andrew was also under that mark in 22.87, but Dressel had the stronger finish to get his hands to the wall first. Andrew has the third fastest time in the world this year. The all-purpose sprint star was near his best time, a 22.80 set at Worlds in 2019 that earned him fourth place.

The race quickly became a two-man affair. Maxime Rooney was third in 23.25, the only swimmer within nine-tenths. Dalton Lowe finished fourth in 23.77, with Zach Harting fifth in 23.81.

says that Dressel’s best is a 22.80 and then posts results that lists the American record as 22.3 done by Dressel……

American record and US open record are not always the same. US open record =best time swam on US soil.
