TYR Sport Announces Signing of World Champion Michael Andrew
TYR Sport on Thursday announced the signing of Michael Andrew, adding the world champion American swimmer to its ranks of athletes.
“We are thrilled to partner with Michael Andrew on his road to Tokyo,” Matt DiLorenzo, CEO of TYR Sport, said in a press release. “Michael is an incredibly talented and versatile athlete, who has already seen tremendous success at a young age. We look forward to collaborating with Michael on product development for our technical categories as well as our lifestyle collections.”
“As one door closes, another one opens,” Andrew said. “I’m honored to continue this journey with TYR as my technical sponsor. TYR embodies excellence, and I’m thrilled to be a part of the family.”
Andrew, who turns 22 on April 18, has been a significant player on the global swimming scene for the last half-decade. He turned pro at age 14, taking the unusual step of bypassing college competition. (He first appeared in Swimming World at age 10.) But he’s made the most of that path.
It started at the 2015 World Junior Championships, where he won the gold medal in the 50 backstroke to go with three silvers and a relay bronze. He was named the Male Swimmer of the Meet at that meet in Singapore. He added three golds and two bronze at World Juniors in 2017.
Against elite swimmers, Michael Andrew garnered gold in the 100 individual medley at the 2016 World Short-Course Championships to go with a pair of silver medals in relays. He won five relay medals at the 2018 short-course worlds and was part of the American’s silver-winning men’s medley relay at the 2019 World Championships. Andrew also competes in the International Swimming League for the New York Breakers, serving as a vice captain in the team’s second year.
A consummate sprinter, the Edina, Minn., native has developed the range in his program to be a contender at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials in several events, up to the 200 IM.
Michael Andrew joins the roster of swimmers sponsored by TYR that includes Katie Ledecky, Simone Manuel, Ryan Lochte, Lilly King, Melanie Margalis, Tom Shields, Kelsi Dahlia, Molly Hannis and Ashley Twichell.
