TYR Pro Series: Michael Andrew Wins Uneventful 100 Breaststroke; Molly Hannis Prevails Among Women
TYR Pro Series: Michael Andrew Wins Slow 100 Breaststroke; Molly Hannis Prevails Among Women
It’s been discussed previously and remains a major topic of discussion for USA Swimming heading into this all-important summer. Can the United States find a go-to performer in the men’s 100 breaststroke? While it would not be damning if Team USA missed the podium in the 100 breast in Tokyo, it would be a major blow to the American medley relay didn’t feature a reliable athlete on the second leg.
Although fast times are not widely expected at the TYR Pro Series in San Antonio, the fact that Michael Andrew won the event in only 1:00.10 was not an encouraging sign. Sure, athletes are finding their way in training and have bigger moments circled on their respective calendars, but the rest of the world has produced several times in the 59-low range (and faster for Adam Peaty), revealing that the U.S. has work ahead.
Closing at the finish, Nic Fink was second to Andrew in 1:00.34, with Olympian Kevin Cordes taking third a full second back in 1:00.35. Will Licon was 1:01.63 for fourth.
Molly Hannis was quickest in the final of the women’s 100 breaststroke, as her time of 1:07.10 bettered the 1:07.31 produced by Annie Lazor. Hannis trailed Lazor at the turn by .22, but was stronger down the stretch and continued the momentum she built late last year with a strong showing in the International Swimming League.
Missing from the field was Lilly King, the reigning Olympic champion who opted to sit out this leg of the Pro Series. Based on King’s performances over the past five years, ranging from international competition to her International Swimming League exploits, Hannis & Co. have little wiggle room in their pursuits of a Tokyo bid.
