TYR Pro Series: Annie Lazor Continues to Shine With Victory in 200 Breaststroke

At one point, Annie Lazor thought she was done with competitive swimming, having moved on from the sport following the 2016 Olympic Trials. About a year later, though, Lazor decided there was more to accomplish in the pool, and since rebooting her career, she has been nothing short of superb.

On Saturday night, Lazor produced the latest strong performance of her comeback, as she won the 200-meter breaststroke at the TYR Pro Series meet in San Antonio. Dueling with Emily Escobedo from the start to the finish, Lazor got her hand on the wall first to prevail in 2:23.91. Escobedo was next, clocking in at 2:24.45. Third place went to 2012 Olympian Micah Sumrall, who turned in a time of 2:27.81.

Missing from the field was Lilly King, the reigning Olympic champion in the 100 breaststroke. But King’s presence was still felt as Lazor is her training partner with the pro group at Indiana. At the Olympic Trials in Omaha in June, Lazor and King may be considered the co-favorites to punch tickets to the Tokyo Games.

Nic Fink had no difficulty winning the men’s 200 breaststroke, thanks to a time of 2:11.92 that was quick enough to hold off Will Licon (2:12.40). Fink had a strong International Swimming League season and has been consistent in his Pro Series appearances, but there is no doubt the United States is in need of a significant bump in the event. Whether that surge come when Trials rolls around remains to be seen.

Internationally, the United States currently sits well back in the 200 breaststroke. While that scenario may be due to tired racing, the fact is that athletes such as Japan’s Shoma Sato and Dutchman Arno Kamminga have been routinely fast in-season, while world-record holder Anton Chupkov is also well ahead with his standard of 2:06-low.
