Two Wins by Kaleigh Haworth, Sydney Stoll See Illinois Past Iowa

Kaleigh Haworth and Sydney Stoll won two events each on Saturday, leading Illinois to victory on the second day of a Big Ten meet at Iowa.

The Fightin’ Illinois led by just one point after Friday’s opening day, but opened that lead to an ultimately comfortable 216-137 victory over the Hawkeyes in Iowa City.

Stoll won the 200 individual medley on Friday, leading a 1-2-3 finish with teammates Sara Jass and Jane Umhofer. (Her time of 2:03.52 edged Jass by a scant .06 seconds.) She picked right up in the first individual event of Saturday’s session by going 1:51.78 to claim the 200 freestyle. She completed an impressive triple with a time of 2:03.25 in the 200 backstroke, edging teammate Athena Salafatinos to victory.

Stoll also had the fastest split of the day (51.81) on the 400 free relay in helping the foursome of Lily Olson, Laurel Bludgen and Isabelle Guerra win. It was the Fightin’ Illini’s second relay win of the day after Iowa had taken both of the victories on Friday.

Bludgen won the 50 freestyle in 23.79, Guerra and Olson following. Bludgen was second to Olson in the 100 free. Guerra also placed second in the 100 butterfly. Salafatinos, who led off a winning 200 medley relay that included Olson and Guerra, was also second in the 100 back.

The breaststroker on that medley relay was Illinois’ other main protagonist of Saturday: Kaleigh Haworth. She went 1:04.59 to win the 100 breast by nearly a second, then edged Jass by a quarter-second to win the 200 breast.

Liv Dorshorst won the mile on Friday and the 500 free on Saturday. Second in the longer event was Cara Bognar, who won the 200 fly and was third in the 500 free.

Iowa led with its divers, a massive advantage over the visitors. Sarah Hughbanks won the two springboard events, posting 348.15 on 3-meter in a 1-2 finish with Sarah Ballard and 311.55 on 1-meter as the Hawkeyes swept the top four places. Third in that event was Geneva Pauley, who won platform.

Iowa won both of the relays on Day 1, with Kennedy Gilbertson, Scarlet Martin and Molly Pedersen on both squads. Gilbertson won the 100 back on Saturday. Martin won the 100 fly after having finished second in the 200 fly.
