GOLD COAST, Australia, August 21. DURING the first morning of prelims at the Pan Pacific Championships in Australia, Swimming World contributor David Rieder tweeted out his up-to-the-minute thoughts on the action and some of the implications looking ahead. Here are his tweets.
Early times from Pan Pacs from women's 100 fly: K. Stewart 58.47, @FeliciaFLee 58.59. U.S. needs faster. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Backtracking a bit… In B-final @FeliciaFLee must beat 58.03 to get onto Worlds team. Americans need a 57-mid or two. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
For the men, @RyanLochte top seed in 51.55, but needs to beat 51.30 for a Worlds spot. Would be a decent drop. #PanPacs2014

Can't be the meet that @beefyTshields hoped for coming off Nationals, but he's still in the driver's seat for Worlds. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
However, nothing @beefyTshields can do to defend his Worlds spot since he's fourth-best American. #PanPacs2014

Here in the women's 400, @katieledecky safe for Worlds, obviously. I think @CierraRunge likely safe at 4:04.67. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Next out of Nationals was @lgsmith19 at 4:06.28. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
4:06.73 for Runge. Smith was 4:07.77, so Runge likely good for the A-final. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
.@RyanLochte has a double today with 200 back (and tonight 400 free relay). Could scratch 100 fly. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Remember that Lochte is not on the Worlds team in 200 back either, and much better chance to make it in that one. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
2:00.08 for Ledecky at the halfway. Don't worry guys, no world record watch this time in prelims. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
.@katieledecky got us way too excited about records in prelims at Nationals. Saving something this time. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
.@katieledecky with a 4:03.09. No one has been faster this year. And that seems slow for her! #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
.@BeccaMannSwims was 4:08.50, but that won't put her among top three Americans. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
This courtesy of @mklueh: @conjaeg is the first American to win the 1500 at an Olympics/Worlds/Pan Pacs since 1984. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
400 free times from Nationals: @mjmcbroom 3:47.19, relay hero @MattBMcLean6F 3:47.30. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
However, @conjaeg top-ranked American/8th in the world at 3:45.34 from Bulldog Grand Slam. So more to come here. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Nice race in heat 3 with @conjaeg, David McKeon, @parkswim1. Jaeger leads at 250. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Park with a huge surge to win in 3:46.10. Jaeger 3:46.20, McKeon 3:47.81, McLean 3:50.49. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Maybe Park wanted the top seed, but he didn't need to go that fast to make final. Jaeger did, with so many Americans. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
.@MattBMcLean6F could be in trouble for even the B-final with @mjmcbroom and @conorjdwyer in final heat. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
If McLean not in top three, he'll have to hope his 3:47.30 from Nationals holds up as number two time. Highly unlikely. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Final heat goes to Hagino in 3:48.90, McBroom & Horton both 3:49.17, so @mjmcbroom takes second spot for USA. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
.@MattBMcLean6F does get into the B-final. @conorjdwyer out of it after a 3:52.04. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Women's 200 back should be interesting – is @FranklinMissy healthy enough to challenge Hocking? #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
U.S. battle for Worlds spots always interesting, especially after @ebeisel34's infamous slip at Nationals. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Top U.S. times: @FranklinMissy 2:08.38, @KathleenBaker2 2:10.42, Bratton 2:11.57. I expect a shake-up & faster times. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Hocking sets the early pace in 2:08.99. @emcbomb 2:10.99. With Franklin's injury, gotta look at Hocking as favorite. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Overheard: "Let's go USA!" @ebeisel34, @eliZAbethP_1126, @KathleenBaker2, and Flickinger. Ya, appropriate. #PanPacs2014.
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
.@ebeisel34, @eliZAbethP_1126, and @KathleenBaker2 all together at the 100. Some good swimmers not gonna make Worlds here. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
.@ebeisel34 2:09.24, 2nd best time yet. @ebeisel34 2:09.95 for second and definitely worthy of a second swim. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Really nice underwater work for 19 year old Sayaka Akase, swimming next to @FranklinMissy. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
.@FranklinMissy 2:09.00, 0.01 behind Hocking. So she and @ebeisel34 2-3 for U.S., @eliZAbethP_1126 to B-final. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Big bunch of Canadians behind Franklin. Caldwell and Bouchard push Snodgrass to B-final. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Let's see who of Franklin/Beisel/Pelton has top times after finals. Times from Nationals shouldn't matter here. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Want more drama? @RyanLochte not currently on Worlds team in 200 back after dying badly last 50 at Nationals. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
.@ryan_f_murphy 1:55.73, faster than at Nationals. Knew he had to give it a run in AM for shot at A-final. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Always a pleasure to watch Ryosuke Irie swim backstroke. Excellent rotation, head position, smooth swimming. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Meanwhile, Irie touches in 1:55.10. Moves ahead of Murphy for top time. @RyanLochte and @TylerClary in final heat. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Big shocker! No @RyanLochte in 200 back. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Repeat: @RyanLochte will NOT defend his 200 back World title. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
.@TylerClary takes final heat in 1:56.45. But all drama in this event for Americans gone with Lochte scratching. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
This is nuts: @RyanLochte, 2008 Olympic champion and 2007/2011/2013 World champ, is OUT of 200 back for 2015. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Reponding to a lot of you: I'm surprised @RyanLochte dropped 200 back and not 100 fly. Simply, he's better in 200 back! #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
Gamble in dropping 200 back for @RyanLochte. It pays off if and only if he makes Worlds in 100 fly tonight. #PanPacs2014
— David Rieder (@David_Rieder) August 23, 2014
The fact that the weather (cold temps and rain) such a talking point NOT good. Shouldn't be distractions like this at big meet. #PanPacs2014
