GOLD COAST, Australia, August 21. DURING the first morning of prelims at the Pan Pacific Championships in Australia, Swimming World contributor David Rieder tweeted out his up-to-the-minute thoughts on the action and some of the implications looking ahead. Here are his tweets.
Looks like @FranklinMissy will be in the B-final after a 1:57.63 200 free prelim. Definitely not at her best. #PanPacs2014

U.S. & Australia combined for top eight times in women's 200. Aggregates for 800 free relay: U.S. 7:49.68, Australia 7:51.03. #PanPacs2014

.@conorjdwyer's time of 1:46.65 not out-of-this-world, even by his standards… but 1:46.93 won U.S. Nationals. #PanPacs2014

Relay aggregates for men's 800 relay: USA 7:09.86, AUS 7:10.45. Bad swim by McKendry (1:48.97) dragged down Aussies. #PanPacs2014

.@FranklinMissy, @eliZAbethP_1126 to 100 back A-final. @KathleenBaker2 to B-final. @r_bootsma15 out of it. #PanPacs2014

Bootsma currently has the spot at Worlds, but nothing she can do if either Pelton or Baker go faster than 1:00.71 in finals. #PanPacs2014

For sure, @FranklinMissy not swimming as fast as some may have predicted last week. Expect things to improve as meet goes on. #PanPacs2014

Heat one of men's 100 back for U.S. had Plummer 53.82, Thoman 54.44. Worlds spots currently Grevers (52.75) & Murphy (53.21). #PanPacs2014

Statement swims from @MattGrevers (that he's the best in the world) and @ryan_f_murphy (he doesn't want to lose Worlds spot). #PanPacs2014

Ok, so after one session of prelims… swimmer of the meet is @MattGrevers! #PanPacs2014

Big swim by @BeccaMannSwims in the 800 of 8:22.45. Now ahead of @CierraRunge (8:24.69) for Worlds spot. #PanPacs2014

Can Runge respond in finals? Will need to drop more than 2 seconds off already great swim from two weeks ago. #PanPacs2014

Hali Flickinger clocks impressive 2:08.33 in 200 fly… but both @katie_mcl87 and @CammileAdams faster. Can't make A-final. #PanPacs2014

Remember times from Pan Pacs prelims DO NOT COUNT towards Worlds selection. From Nats: CA 2:07.12, KM 2:08.74, HF 2:08.77. #PanPacs2014

Lot of events where USA bunched at top of prelims. They have to with rules for finals. Less competition for other countries. #PanPacs2014

This whole Worlds selection off finals is going to be even more interesting with the 87% chance of rain tonight.
This won’t affect the milers, as Jaeger and McBroome appear to be safe after times from prelims.
Cierra will have to drop 2 more seconds, but with much worse weather conditions predicted than what the prelim 800 swimmers faced.
And if Pelton really did save her taper for this meet, Bootsma still has the upper hand because of the predicted rain/ wind for tonight’s final.
