Trofeu Brasil: Viviane Jungblut Threatens National Record in 8:30 800 Free
Viviane Jungblut was just off a career-best time in the women’s 800 freestyle on the fifth and penultimate day of the Trofeu Brasil.
Jungblut, who set a national record of 8:29.30 in December, was just off that time Friday in Rio de Janeiro. She clocked in at 8:30.84, more than four seconds clear of the field. It completes Jungblut’s sweep of the 400-800-1,500 events at the meet.
She and runner-up Gabrielle Goncalves were both under the FINA A standard in the event. Goncalves took the silver medal in 8:35.29.
Trofeu Brasil is one of the selection meets being used to build the Brazilian team for the 2022 World Championships.
The speed of Thursday night’s 100 free translated into the men’s 100 butterfly Friday, with three swimmers under the FINA A cut in the event. Matheus Gonche, the winner of the 200 fly, completed the double by rallying from fourth place at the 50-meter mark. He clocked in at 51.60, under the auto time of 51.96.
Second was Vini Lanza, who went 51.82. That edged out the top seed from morning prelims, Kayky Mota. The Tennessee swimmer was still faster than prelims but landed third in 51.94. Caio Pumputis finished fourth in 52.64.
The win in the other men’s event of the night went to Leonardo de Deus in his specialty, the 200 backstroke. The Brazilian record-holder went from third in prelims to first in final, the only swimmer to break two minutes in 1:59.50. It’s well shy of his 2016 national record (1:57.00) and also shy of the automatic cut for worlds (1:58.07). Brandonn Almeida finished second in 2:01.95.
Giovanna Diamante completed the butterfly double by going 58.87 in the 100 fly. That complements a runner-up finish in the 100 free. Her time is just shy of the auto standard of 58.33.
Daynara de Paula finished second in 59.24. Stephanie Balduccini, who won the 100 free and 200 free, nearly surged to the win but landed third in 59.27. She produced the fastest closing 50 of the race in 31.24 seconds.
Andrea Elianna Berrino capped the women’s backstroke treble by handling the 200 back. Her winning time of 2:14.14 was more than a second clear of the field, though three seconds outside the A standard. Alexia Tavares Assuncao touched second in 2:15.43.
