Torri Huske, Claire Curzan Making 2023 Long Course Debut at TYR Pro Swim Series Mission Viejo (Psych Sheet)

The last TYR Pro Swim Series meet of the season will be held next week (May 17-20) in Mission Viejo, Calif., and this will serve as the final national-caliber meet prior to the held in the United States in advance of June’s U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, a meet that will double as the qualifier for the World Championships. Plenty of top-ranked Americans will be in attendance, including a pair of key performers from last year’s Worlds team, Stanford teammates Torri Huske and Claire Curzan, racing long course for the first time this year.

Huske, the 100 butterfly world champion and Worlds bronze medalist in the 100 freestyle, is entered in both of those events plus the 50 and 200 free, 50 fly, 50 backstroke and 200 IM, while Curzan is on the psych sheet for the 50 and 100 free, 50 and 100 fly and all three backstroke races. The sprint freestyle events will include plenty of star power, with Huske and Curzan joined by veterans Abbey WeitzeilSimone ManuelOlivia Smoliga and Taylor Ruck, plus World Championships runnerup Kasia Wasick of Poland in the 50 free.

Lilly King is set to race her signature breaststroke events, and the Sandpipers of Nevada trio of Katie GrimesBella Sims and Claire Weinstein will go to work in the middle-distance freestyle races. Notably, Grimes is not entered in the 400 IM this time. In the backstroke races, Rhyan White and Isabelle Stadden will clash with Curzan and Smoliga.

On the men’s side, Ryan Murphy will race the 100 free and 100 fly in addition to his signature races, the 100 and 200 back, with 50 back world-record holder Hunter Armstrong and 50 back world champion Justin Ress present for the 50 and 100-meter backstroke races. Nic Fink is the clear standout in the men’s breaststroke events while fellow veteran Ryan Held highlights the men’s sprint freestyle races.

Destin Lasco, Murphy’s training partner at Cal and a two-time NCAA champion in the 200-yard back, will race in Mission Viejo along with Gabriel Jett, Bjorn Seeliger and Jack Alexy, other standout performers from Cal’s national-title-winning team, and former Cal Bear Trenton Julian, now training in Mission Viejo, is set to race as well.
