Toronto Titans Need an Upset to Advance to ISL Final
With five of the six matches of this year’s ISL playoffs completed, Energy Standard and the London Roar have already clinched spots in the ISL final, and two other teams, the Cali Condors and LA Current, are close to securing their spots. However, the Toronto Titans still have an outside chance of sneaking in — if they can pull an enormous upset in the final match of the playoffs.
Energy Standard has two match wins in the playoffs, while London, Cali and LA each have one. Cali, with Caeleb Dressel absent in the sixth playof match, can advance with either a win or a second-place finish. Toronto, however, needs to defeat Cali and win a playoff match for the first time ever in order to qualify for the ISL final. Previously, Toronto placed third in Playoff Match 2 (behind LA and London) and second in Playoff Match 3 (behind Energy Standard).
Because LA beat Toronto in the teams’ only head-to-head matchup of the postseason, the Current hold the tiebreaker over the Titans. So the only way in for Toronto is to get a win in Playoff Match 6, giving them a first, second and third-place finish for the postseason, compared to a first and two thirds for LA.
Toronto will bring a handful of stars to the sixth playoff match, including Kylie Masse, Louise Hansson, Fabien Schwingenschlogl, Shane Ryan, Kasia Wasick, Luc Kroon and Lisa Bratton, but it will take a huge effort for the Titans to upset Cali and advance to the final.
