Top Target in Class of 2025, Alex Shackell, Chooses Cal

NEW COMMIT: Alex Shackell, the top recruit in the Class of 2025, has announced her college decision: The Carmel, Indiana native has selected the University of California, Berkeley.

Her older brother, Aaron Shackell, is a freshman on the men’s team at Cal.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of California, Berkeley! Thank you to everyone who has helped me reach this dream of mine!! Go Bears🐻💙💛”

Shackell earned silver at the World Championships in July as part of the 4x200m free relay.

She earned her spot on Team USA’s roster after finishing fifth in the 200m free at Phillips 66 Nationals. Back in December, she won the 50 free, 100 free, 100 fly and 200 IM at Juniors East.

She trains year-round with the elite Carmel Swim Club. A current junior at Carmel High School, she is the two-time defending champion in the 100 fly at the Indiana State Championship.

In yards, her best times include:

  • 50 free – 21.73
  • 100 free – 47.44
  • 200 free – 1:43.60
  • 100 fly – 50.89
  • 200 fly – 1:53.52
  • 200 IM – 1:54.54
  • 400 IM – 4:10.49

In long course meters, her best times include:

  • 50m free – 25.25
  • 100m free – 54.08
  • 200m free – 1:56.70
  • 100m fly – 57.59
  • 200m fly – 2:07.95
  • 200m IM – 2:13.63
  • 400m IM – 4:52.73

By the time she arrives in Berkeley, Cal will be part of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Shackell will be an immediate conference and national title contender.
