Tona Zinn of Laguna Hills Breaks Two Records at CIF Southern Section DII Championships

After the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) delayed sports through the fall, the 2021 CIF Southern Section DII State Championships were held on May 25 at Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

The meet was highlighted by Laguna Hills junior Tona Zinn who set a pair of DII records. The Northwestern commit won the 200 IM in 1:46.47, lowering the previous mark of 1:46.91 from 2015. He then claimed the 100 breast in 53.66, crushing the old standard of 54.91 from 2014.

Despite not having any individual event winners, Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) won the 4×50 medley relay in 1:33.91. They also narrowly finished second in the 4×100 free relay in 3:08.94, just behind champion El Segundo’s 3:08.88.

Notre Dame’s Evan Yoo, who is off to Army West Point this fall, was also under the previous 100 breast DII record but wound up with silver. Yoo was also the runner-up in the 200 IM, touching in 1:50.75.

In addition to Zinn, future Nittany Lion Justin Schneider of Murrieta Mesa also found himself on top of the podium in a pair of events. The junior secured the gold medal in both the 50 free (20.65) and 500 free (4:28.34).

South Pasadena’s Nicholas Chau dove to the top spot on the 1-meter board with a final score of 572.90.

GIRLS MEET

Corona del Mar’s Maggie Schalow led her team to victory as the meet’s only double-event winner on the girls’ side. The sophomore won the 100 fly (53.83) and 200 free (1:47.99) in addition to swimming on the winning 4×50 medley relay.

This was Corona del Mar’s first title since 2006 and their third overall in program history.

The other Corona del Mar winner included soon-to-be Gaucho Michelle Tekawy in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.34, who just out-touched UCLA commit Morganne Malloy (1:03.53) of Capistrano Valley.

The sprint freestyle events proved to be exciting: Saugus’s Riley Botton won the 50 free (23.33) and was the runner-up in the 100 free (50.42). Harvard Westlake’s Claire McLean took a close second in the 50 free (23.37), but edge out Botton in the 100 free (50.37) for the victory.

On the boards, Dana Hills’s Olivia Paquette posted a score of 517.45 for the win as the only athlete over the 500-point mark.
