Tom Dean & Matt Richards Among 35 Selected To Britain Squad For European Short-Course Championships
British Swimming has selected a team of 35 for the European Short-Course Championships next month in Otopeni, Romania, including all the medallists from the Fukuoka worlds.
Matt Richards and Tom Dean – who claimed a historic one-two in the 200 free at the World Championships in July – will be joined by James Guy and Duncan Scott with whom they won the 4×200 free relay in Japan.
Richards makes his European short-course debut while Dean will seek to add to the 400 free silver he won at Glasgow 2019, a year after 200 bronze at the 2022 short-course worlds in Melbourne.
The pair will meet David Popovici, the 2022 double world and European champion and 100 free world record-holder, who’ll be swimming in front of his home fans.
Ben Proud, Anna Hopkin, Freya Anderson, Lucy Hope, Lauren Cox, Joe Litchfield and Jacob Whittle – all medallists in July – are also on the team.
Among those not travelling to Romania is Adam Peaty, who will instead compete at the Rotterdam Qualification Meet from 30 November to 3 December,
Athletes were selected based on their performances at international swim meets between 1 May and 30 August as they build towards Paris in 2024.
British Swimming Head Coach Bill Furniss said:
“The European Short Course Championships are a great opportunity for us to assess where the athletes are at come the end of the first training block of Olympic year.
“The short-course aspect of the competition will allow us to collect valuable insight into our athletes’ performances and help them focus on developing their starts, turns, and finishing skills. The unique relay opportunities presented to us will also be crucial as we look to build on our ability in this area.
“It will also be a great opportunity to continue building team morale as we build towards the Olympic Games, with the team list combining our more experienced swimmers with some new faces to the senior team.”
