Title IX News: More Men’s Programs Are Eliminated
SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose State University men’s cross country will be reinstated as an intercollegiate sport while men’s gymnastics and men’s tennis will be discontinued. SJSU will now field six men’s and 10 women’s intercollegiate sports that will compete at the NCAA Division I level in 1997-98. NCAA Division I schools must sponsor a minimum combination of six men’s and eight women’s sports. Six student-athletes who have remaining academic eligibility and men’s gymnastics coach Ted Edwards and men’s tennis coach John Hubbell are affected. “We fully intend to honor our scholarship commitments to these young men and assist them in their academic pursuits at San Jose State or another four-year school should they wish to transfer,” said athletics director Robert Brennan. “The fewest possible student-athletes are impacted by these recommendations.” Men’s gymnastics and tennis were identified as sports to discontinue, among other reasons, since both have limited participation rates and do not have current financial resources to compete at a championship level. Cross country will be reinstated because the school can compete effectively locally and at the conference level with a small squad size and limited budget and has a strong recruiting base.
