NEW COMMIT: Xavier University has received a new verbal commitment for the 2021-22 season and beyond from backstroker and freestyler Amy Van Son of Maryville, Tenn.

She will suit up for the Musketeers as a member of the class of 2025 along with Kiara Anchrum, Maddie Agans and Molly Dynda.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so excited to continue my academic and swimming careers at Xavier University. I loved Xavier’s motto “all for one and one for all” which I felt when visiting campus and when talking to the team. Thank you to all of my teammates, coaches, and family who have helped me get to where I am today! I can’t wait to be apart of this amazing team and call Xavier my home for the next four years! Go X!!!”

A Futures qualifier, Van Son does her club swimming with Prime Aquatics and placed 12th in the 100 back and 15th in the 500 free at the Southeastern Swimming Championships in February after a strong showing at the Speedo Music City Invitational in December.

In Summer 2019, she earned 100% best times at the Southeastern LCM Swimming Championships before going on to compete at Greensboro Futures.

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 27.13
  • 100 back – 57.32
  • 200 back – 2:04.56
  • 100 free – 53.58
  • 200 free – 1:54.70
  • 500 free – 5:09.81

A current senior at Maryville High School, Van Son has competed at the Tennessee State Championships the last three seasons. She placed ninth in the 100 back and 13th in the 200 free during her junior campaign – a great improvement from her 23rd and 35th place finishes in those events, respectively, as a sophomore.

Van Son will make a big impact in the Musketeers’ backstroke group when she arrives on campus next year. She would’ve scored in the B-final of the 100 back and 200 back at the 2020 Big East Championships where Xavier finished third overall in the team standings.
