Three-Time Ohio State Champion Nyah Funderburke Will Stay Local, Verbals to Buckeyes for 2021
NEW COMMIT: Backstroker and butterflyer Nyah Funderburke of Blacklick, Ohio, has announced her verbal commitment to The Ohio State University beginning in the fall of 2021.
Her father, Lawrence Funderburke, is a former Ohio State standout basketball player who went on to play in the NBA.
She told Swimming World:
“A “nut” doesn’t fall far from the tree… I am very excited to announce my athletic and academic commitment to The Ohio State University to continue the Buckeye tradition that my parents started! With everything going on, I’m blessed to attend a university with unmatched resources, support, and cultural values right in my own backyard. Endless thank you’s to family, coaches, the team, and most importantly, the Lord for helping guide me through this process. As always, #GOBUCKS”
No stranger to the Buckeyes’ program, Funderburke swims year-round with Ohio State Swim Club and owns a pair of Junior National cuts. She most recently won the 100m back at the MAKO Senior Circuit in in February after earning a best time at Juniors East in December. Last summer, she grabbed silver in the 50m back at Ohio LCM Seniors before going on to race to the runner-up spot in the 50m back at Cleveland Sectionals.
Her best times include:
- 50 back – 25.38
- 100 back – 54.35
- 50 fly – 25.11
- 100 fly – 54.68
Also competing for Columbus School For Girls, Funderburke is a six-time Ohio State Championship finalist. She won the 100 back and 100 fly as a junior while taking first in the 50 free and third in the 100 fly during her sophomore season.
She will join Allie Fenska, Teresa Ivan, Mackenzie DeWitt, Malia Rausch, Mairin O’Brien, Paige Hall and Gwen Woodbury with the Buckeyes as a member of the class of 2025.
