Thomas Heilman Snares Third NAG Record Of Winter Juniors-East; Latest Mark Arrives In 200 Butterfly
For the third time at the Winter Junior Championships-East, Thomas Heilman has made an edit to the National Age Group record book.
With NAG (15-16) standards to his credit in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly from earlier in the competition, Heilman added an age-group record in the 200 butterfly on Saturday night. In his latest starring role, Heilman registered a time of 1:40.86 to edge the 2018 record of 1:40.91 by Luca Urlando.
Given the way he has performed over the past few days, Heilman was expected to break Urlando’s record. But the mark was not guaranteed until the 15-year-old touched the wall and looked to the scoreboard to see he had clipped the prior mark by .05. Heilman was followed in second place by Gibson Holmes, who went 1:42.34.
Representing Cavalier Aquatics, Heilman sped to the front of the field with an opening split of 22.66, and he went through the 100-yard mark in 48.31. While Heilman slowed over the back half of the race, with splits of 26.08 and 26.47, he did enough to add another NAG record to his collection.
Heilman also went 42.96 in the 100 freestyle, as he led off his club’s third-place 400 freestyle relay. New Albany picked up the win in the event, as Hudson Williams anchored in 42.71.
