Thomas Heilman, Anna Moesch Win Again as YMCA Nationals Conclude
On the final night of YMCA Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., the two stars of the meet each won one last individual event and one relay. Piedmont’s Thomas Heilman added a victory in the men’s 200 butterfly to his previous wins in the 100 butterfly, 400 IM and 50 freestyle, while Greater Somerset County’s Anna Moesch took first place in the women’s 100 freestyle after her previous 200 free and 50 free wins.
Heilman dominated the 200 fly with his 1:44.14 performance, while Spartanburg’s Robin Domingo finished about four seconds behind in second place (1:48.09) and Champaign’s Andrew Lin placed third (1:49.14). Heilman then led off Piedmont’s 400 free relay in 43.43, and he was followed by Will Browne, Teddy Cross and David King on the way to a 3:00.22 victory.
Moesch put up a time of 47.76 in the 100 free, with the 16-year-old’s time just a few tenths shy of the standard required to qualify for the A-final of the event at last month’s NCAA Championships. Meanwhile, Spartanburg’s Kirsti McEnroe edged out Upper Main Line’s Alexa Fulton for second place, 49.04 to 49.12. At the end of the session, Greater Somerset County’s Catherine Meisner, Caitlyn Hughes, Emily Thompson and Moesch won the women’s 400 free relay by more than two seconds in 3:19.24, with Moesch anchoring in 48.08.
Thompson also won the women’s 200 fly for Greater Somerset in 1:57.82, while Summit Branch’s Lizzy Washburn used a strong final 50 to overtake Lakeland Hills’ Lily Hann and finish second, 1:59.60 to 1:59.69. ME Lyons’ Ava Sutphin finished eight seconds ahead of the field in the 1650 free with her time of 16:40.33, while Westport Weston’s Claire Kehley finished second in 16:48.50. York’s Meaghan Harnish finished third in 17:00.46. A tight finish in the women’s 100 breaststroke saw Farmington Valley’s Mackenzie Headley take the win in 1:01.17 ahead of Schroeder teammates Gabrielle LePine (1:01.27) and Tori Brostowitz (1:01.36).
ME Lyon’s Alex Craft picked up a big victory in the men’s 1650 free in 15:33.60, while Westport Weston’s Riley Twiss placed second (15:46.63) and Western’s Daniel Godino finished third (15:48.99). Cumberland’s Daniel Diehl grabbed the win by a half-second in the 100 free with a time of 43.34, and he was followed by Brendan Whitfield (43.80) and Tommy Janton (44.42). The final individual event of the meet saw Northwest NC’s Steven Insixiengmay edge out Birmingham’s Ethan Schwab, 54.22 to 54.40, while third plasce went to Spartanburg’s John Broome (55.18).
