Texas’ Townley Haas turned in a stunning NCAA and American record in the men’s 200-yard free at the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
Haas raced his way to a blistering time of 1:30.46, lowering Simon Burnett’s NCAA record of 1:31.20 set here in Atlanta back in 2006 as well as Ricky Berens‘ American mark of 1:31.31. Most amazingly, Haas swam faster than his fastest-ever 800 free relay split of 1:30.52.
Comparative splits:
Haas: 20.90, 43.61, 1:06.92, 1:30.46
Berens: 21.43, 44.80, 1:08.06, 1:31.31
Burnett: 21.28, 44.44, 1:07.53, 1:31.20

Haas, who destroyed the 500 free last night, became the first swimmer since Florida’s Conor Dwyer in 2010 to win the 200 and 500 free.
Haas also won Texas’ seventh title of the meet, helping UT continue to close in on the record of 11 set by Texas back in 2001.
Georgia’s Matias Koski turned in a sizzler himself for second with a 1:31.54, the fifth-fastest time ever.
