Texas Pool Closed for Repairs After Leak Discovered
Swimming World reported earlier that the American Short Course Championships, typically held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swimming Center at the University of Texas, have been relocated to San Antonio after the discovery of a leak in the UT facility.
Now, more details about the situation have been released. A report from UT News indicates that chlorinated water from the pool leaked into nearby Waller Creek. The report quoted University director of Environment and Health Safety John Salsman, who said that his staff observed chlorine in the creek water, a chlorine smell in the air and bleaching of soil.
According to the post, the university has begun dechlorinating the water and has stopped adding water to the facility while repairs are conducted. This could mean the pool is closed for an extended period of time, even with the NCAA championships coming up in the next few weeks.
Travis Feldhaus, a spokesman for the University of Texas, confirmed that the Texas women’s and men’s teams have on and off-campus pool options for training, so their NCAA prep should be unaffected.
The report from UT News indicates that Texas’ diving pool appears to be functioning as normal.
