Texas Longhorns Score 2020 Verbal from Futures Champion Zac Van Zandt
NEW COMMIT: The University of Texas has scored a new verbal for the fall of 2020 from versatile Zac Van Zandt of Winnetka, Calif.
Van Zandt, who owns a pair of U.S. Open cuts with five additional Summer Juniors standards, swims year-round with CCAT Swimming. He attended USA Swimming’s 2018 National Select Camp and finished 13th in the 100 free at Juniors West in December. This past summer, he earned gold in the 200m free and bronze in the 100m free at Santa Clara Futures.
Also competing for Crespi Carmelite High School, Van Zandt is a four-time California CIF State Championship finalist. He placed third in the 100 free and sixth in the 200 free as a junior after finishing third and fourth, respectively, in those events during his sophomore season. He has also earned both NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for his efforts.
He told Swimming World:
“Texas felt like home the moment that I stepped on campus. Between the coaches and facilities there was no better option out there for me to further develop my swimming to an elite status.”
His best times include:
- 50 free – 20.86
- 100 free – 44.42
- 200 free – 1:36.32
- 100 breast – 55.31
- 100 fly – 48.90
- 200 fly – 1:48.42
- 200 IM – 1:49.67
Van Zandt will add his talents to an already-loaded mid-distance freestyle group when he arrives in Austin as a member of the class of 2024, and he could find himself in a number of different events given his versatility as well.
