Texas Leads After Day One at Men’s Div. I NCAA Champs
By Phillip Whitten
ATHENS, Georgia, March 28. RELAYS count double, and relays win NCAAs. Everyone knows it.
Tonight, the first night of the Men's NCAA Swimming and diving Championships, being held at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the Univerity of Georgia, Stanford won both relays — one in record time. Not only that, they went one-two in the 200 IM!
So why is it, after Day One of the year's biggest college swimming blowout, that it's the Texas Longhorns in the lead, 20 points ahead of the Cardinal? The answer can be summed up in one word: diving. This is, after all, the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, and Texas placed one-seven in the one-meter springboard diving. That's good for 32 points — more than the Horns' margin to this point.
Here are the top 10 teams after Day One:
1. Texas 163 2. Stanford 143 3. Arizona 104 4. Florida 91 5. Auburn 83.5 6. USC 70 7. California 67 8. Minnesota 64.5 9. Tennessee 57 10. Virginia 52
The action tonight was fast, furious, and heavily impacted by relay diqualifications.
Here's a rundown of tonight's events:
200 Yard Freestyle Relay
Stanford started out with a bang, breaking the American (1:16.76) and NCAA (1:16.50) records with a 1:16.49 effort. Skip Kenney's warriors were paced by two sub-19 second relay splits: Peter Marshall's 18.74 and Bobby O'Bryan's anchor 18.94. No other swimmer went under 19. Randall Bal led off for the Cardinal in 19.52 while Andrew Schnell split 19.29.
However… Anthony Ervin led off Cal' relay with a 19.05 swim, breaking the NCAA mark of 19.06 Roland Schoeman set in prelims, and tying Tom Jager's American mark set in 1990.
Anthony is a generous sort of guy, the kind of guy who likes to spread the glory around. In 2000, he tied Gary Hall, Jr., for Olympic gold in the 50 in Sydney. Last year he tied Matt Biondi's American record (41.80) in the 100 free. Now he's tied Tom Jager's American 50 free standard.
Cal finished second in 1:16.89, Arizona was third in 1:17.39, with Schoeman going 19.19 to lead off. Auburn as fourth (1:17.41) and Texas fifth (1:18.09).
500 Yard Freestyle
Everyone knows how Klete Keller swims his races. He hangs back just as long as he can, then sprints at the end, winning by as small a margin as possible. They don't call Klete the Cardiac Kid for nothing.
That's why the USC sophomore's tactics took everyone by surprise this evening, including his teammate and rival, Erik Vendt.
Keller, the defending champion (4:14.67) but only the fourth fastest qualifier, was out like a shot tonight. He grabbed the lead on the very first stroke, and before anyone knew it, he was too far ahead to catch.
Splitting 48.66 at the 100, he turned at 1:39.70 at 200 yards. That's when Vendt started to go after him. Vendt cut one-tenth of a second off Keller's lead on the third 100, then drew to only eight-tenths behind at the 400. Then Keller called on his patented sprint, and his 50.27 final 100 was too much for his teammate to handle. Keller touched in 4:12.83, with Vendt second in 4:13.99 and Harvard's John Cole third in 4:16.91. Georgia's Robert Margalis, the top qualifier at 4:16.12, was never a factor in the race and finished a disappointing eighth (4:24.07).
"I didn't tell anyone what I planned to do," said Keller. Erik and I are close, but we're not that close. I wanted to blow everyone away with a quick start, but I was worried about dying in the second half of the race.
There was no need to worry.
200 Yard Individual Medley
Stanford wanted a one-two sweep in the 200 IM, and tonight the Easter Bunny delivered Big Time, as sophomore Markus Rogan and freshman Dan Trupin battled down to the wire with Rogan, an Austrian import, winning by five-hundredths of a second in 1:44.03. USC's Tamas Kerekjarto was third in 1:45.56.
Kerekjarton was out first with a 22.77 for the 50 fly, with Trupin right behind in 22.78 and Rogan third in 23.27. Rogan took the lead at the 100 in 48.16, courtesy of his 24.89 backstroke split. Only Auburn's Kirk Hampleman could get under 26, with Trupin splitting 26.56.
But Trupin uncorked a 29.93 50 breaststroke split, gaining nine-tenths on the leader, and cutting his lead to just three tenths of a second. (Only Brendan Hansen, swimming in consols, went faster than Trupin. Hansen split 29.15.
In the final 50, the Stanford underclassmen battled stroke-for-stroke, with Trupin's 24.81 effort falling 5-hundredths short of his teammate.
50 Yard Freestyle
This was the confrontation everyone was waiting for. Battle of the Titans II, Biondi v. Jager redux: Anthony Ervin versus Roland Schoeman.
Arizona's Schoeman entered the meet as the NCAA record-holder at 19.07. In prelims in the free relay, he lowered that time to 19.06. But Ervin beat him in the 50 prelims, 19.10 to 19.18. In tonight's first event, Ervin again was faster, breaking Schoeman's NCAA mark by one-hundredth of a second. Now it was Show Time — no prelims, no relays. Just the two fastest guys in the water going mano-a-mano.
Before the start, Ervin walked over to Schoeman in lane 4 and shook his hand. Very cool. The ultimate sportsman.
But when the horn sounded, it was the Arizona senior who took a two-foot lead. Ervin gamely fought back, but he couldn't gain enough. At the wall it was Schoeman 19.08, Ervin 19.10.
Stanford's Randall Bal was third in 19.48, while U.N.C.-Wilmington's Dan Gallagher held on to fourth place in 19.65.
One-Meter Diving
Olympian Troy Dumais was The Man for Texas, winning the one-meter springboard with 390.35 points, 10 points more than Kentucky's Clayton Moss. Justin Dumais, Troy's brother, placed seventh. Stanford was shut out of the scoring.
400 Yard Medley Relay
In prelims, Stanford and Texas went at it tooth and nail, with the Cradinal qualifying first by 15-hundredths.
In the final, the same two teams battled again. Though Texas closed the margin to 12-hundredths, the outcome was the same: Stanford first, Longhorns second.
The Cardinal's Peter marshall got his team out in front with a 45.87 backstroke split, a little slower than this morning's 45.54. Cal's Alex Lim was 46..61 and Minnesota's Tom Smolinski followed in 46.85. Tommy Hannan went 47.24 for Texas.
Brendan Hansen brough the Horns back into contention with his 51.61 breaststroke split. But stanford's Michael Bruce was not exactly chopped liver — his 52.53 left the Cardinal 45-hundredths in front.
Not for long. Ian Crocker threw in a 45.49 fly leg for Eddie Reese's good ol' boys, while Stanford's Dan Westcott could "only" swim a 46.09. So it was Texas with a 15-hundredths lead as the teams turned to their anchors.
The Cardinal's Randall Bal reached deep down for his 42.32, just fast enough to catch Chris Kemp (42.59). At the wall, it was Stanford, 3:06.81, Texas 3:06.93.
There were some other outstanding relay splits. In the breaststroke, Auburn's Pat Calhoun went 52.57 and Minnesota's jeff Hackler turned in a 52.68.
Jason Gagnon, of Georgia, had the third-fastest 100 fly, 46.43, as six swimmers wnt under 47.0.
Six swimmers also swam under 43 for the freestyle anchor leg, with Cal's Ervin splitting a fastest-ver 41.00. However, Cal was one of three teams disqualified in the final, so his time will not be recorded officially. The new relay takeoff system remains very controversial here, as it was last weekend in Austin.
Other fast free splits; Schoeman, 42.25; Minnesota's Terry Silkaitis, 42.75.
