Texas A&M Adds Michael Walker as Assistant Coach

Michael Walker has been hired as an assistant coach at Texas A&M, the school announced on Monday.

Walker arrives in College Station off five seasons at the University of Delaware, three as an assistant coach and the last two as an association head coach.

“We are excited to have Mike Walker joining our staff this coming July,” head coach Jay Holmes said in a university statement. “He brings a great deal of coaching experience to our staff, both internationally and collegiately. He has coached Olympians and successful international swimmers. Most recently, he played an important role in the University of Delaware’s success in the CAA as they posted consecutive record-setting seasons and lowered multiple school records. We expect him to come in and have an immediate impact on our team and program. We look forward to having him and his family here with us.”

Walker helped guide several Colonial Athletic Association champions in his five seasons.

Walker, a native of Bridgeport, West Virginia, graduated from West Virginia University in 2009. He was a team captain of the Mountaineers and won Big East titles in the 200 backstroke in 2009 and the 400 individual medley in 2008 and 2009. An All-American in 2009, he led West Virginia to the Big East team title in 2007 and qualified for U.S. Olympic Trials in three events in 2008.

He began his coaching career in 2010 under his former West Virginia coach, Sergio Lopez Miro, in the latter’s stint at the Bolles School in Florida. Walker spent five years there, which included a chance to coach Olympian Gisela Morales of Guatemala as that country’s head coach at the 2015 Pan American Games and 2015 World Championships.

From 2016-18 Walker served as the head coach of Fairmount Area Swim Team in West Virginia and as an assistant at Fairmount State University.
