Texas 6A State Champion Matthew Tannenberger Sends Verbal to In-State Longhorns

NEW COMMIT: The University of Texas has earned an in-state verbal commitment for the fall of 2020 from Matthew Tannenberger of The Woodlands, Texas.

Tannenberger, who owns seven U.S. Open standards, has done his club swimming with Swim Streamline at Northampton throughout his entire age group career. He most recently won the 200m free at NCSAs this past summer after earning a best time in the 200m fly at Austin Sectionals. Last winter, he placed 22nd in the 500 free at Juniors West before going on to earn bronze in the 200 free with five other top-15 finishes at College Station Sectionals. He also attended the USA Swimming National Select Camp in 2018.

A current senior at The Woodlands High School, Tannenberger is a four-time Texas UIL 6A State Championship finalist. He placed third in the 500 free and 10th in the 200 IM while anchoring the winning 4×100 free relay as a junior. The NISCA All-American also placed fourth in both the 200 and 500 free during his sophomore season.

He told Swimming World:

I firmly believe that the amazing coaching staff, team culture, teammates and facilities will help me achieve my goals in the future. Special thanks to my parents, coaches, friends and family for being such an influential part of this process. Can’t wait to represent such a legendary team and university! HOOK’EM!!”

His best times include:

  • 50 free – 20.88
  • 100 free – 45.17
  • 200 free – 1:39.29
  • 500 free – 4:24.13
  • 1000 free – 9:22.50
  • 1650 free – 15:47.88
  • 200 IM – 1:51.11
  • 400 IM – 4:00.35
  • 200 fly – 1:53.78

He’ll join Ethan HeasleyCoby CarrozzaVictor TremblayArmando Vegas, and Zac Van Zandt in Austin as members of the Longhorns’ class of 2024.
