Texas 6A State Champion Alexis Newman Delivers 2022 Verbal Pledge to Arizona
NEW COMMIT: New Caney, Texas native and U.S. Open qualifier Alexis Newman has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Arizona and will arrive on campus in the fall of 2022.
She will join Eleni Gewalt of Spring Grove, Ill. as a member of the Wildcats’ Class of 2026.
Regarding her commitment, she said:
“I am BEYOND blessed to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at The University Of Arizona!! This wouldn’t have been possible without the endless support from my family, coaches, and friends. I can’t wait to begin the next chapter of my life in Tucson, BEAR DOWN?!!”
Primarily a backstroker, Newman does her club swimming with Blue Tide Aquatics and placed second in the 100 back at the 18&U Winter Championships – LAC in December after notching a best time at the Toyota U.S. Open in December.
Newman also finished 11th in the 100 back at Juniors West in 2019 and won the 50m back at the Southern Zone Senior Championships the summer prior.
Her best times include:
- 50 back – 25.33
- 100 back – 53.97
- 200 back – 2:01.66
- 100 fly – 54.84
- 100 breast – 1:05.88
- 200 IM – 2:04.03
A rising senior at Kingwood High School, Newman is a four-time UIL Texas 6A State Championship finalist. She won the 100 back as a junior while taking second in that event as well as fourth in the 100 fly during her sophomore season.
Newman is a huge get for the Wildcats, who finished seventh at the 2021 Pac-12 Championships. She would’ve been one of their top backstrokers last season and will join a training group led by Julia Heimstead, Azana Merckx, Maddy Burt, and Grace Anderson,
