Tennessee Women, Louisville Men Split Quick Long Course Meet

Tennessee’s women’s team and Louisville’s men won a tight nonleague dual meet on Thursday, contested in long-course meters.

The Tennessee women claimed a narrow 152-148 win, while the Louisville men prevailed, 156-144.

For the Lady Vols, a fast start to the meet furnished by the distant contingent did the job.

Kate McCarville led a 1-2-3 result in the 800 freestyle with a time of 8:53.24. Brooklyn Douthwright followed by winning the 200 free in 2:00.90, with teammate Julia Mrozinski following her. Mrozinski would also finish second in the 500 free ahead of Lauren Wetherell, who was third in both that and the 800.

Mona McSharry helped Tennessee start the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, teaming with Josephine Fuller, Katie Mack and Camille Spink to go 1:49.66.

McSharry won the 100 breast in 1:07.20 (teammate Emelie Fast was second) and added the 200 breast title in 2:28.73.

Fuller won the 100 back in 1:00.58, edging Paige Hetrick by .32 seconds. Fuller also won the 200 back in 2:12.66 and the 200 individual medley in 2:14.34. Sara Stolter won the 200 fly in 2:15.33 and was third in the 100 fly. McCarville was third in the 200 fly.

Diving and sprinting allowed Louisville to keep it close. The Cardinals took the top three spots (and top four times) in the 50 free, led by Gabi Albiero’s 25.12. Christiana Regenauer followed in 25.52, .05 up on Lucy Mehraban. Albiero won the 100 free in 55.26, four tenths up on Mehraban.

Else Praasterink won both diving events. She scored 316.73 to outlast Tennessee’s Lynae Shorter in 3-meter, then authored a 1-2 with Lindsay Gizzi on 1-meter with a winning score of 291.53.

After finishing second in the 100 back, Hetrick won the 100 fly in 59.74 ahead of Regenauer. Summer Cardwell won the 400 free in 4:16.63. Mehraban, Regenauer, Ella Welch and Hetrick went 1:41.10 to edge the Vols by .29 for the win in the 200 free relay, with Albiero’s lead off of 25.16 leading the B relay to third in an attempt to go 1-2.

The men’s meet was dominated by a small group, with four swimmers (three of them Cardinals) winning two events each.

Louisville’s Ilia Sibirtsev won the 800 free in 8:06.95 and the 400 free in 3:55.78. The latter was a great race, edging Tennessee’s Joaquin Vargas by .32 seconds. Denis Petrashov swept breaststroke, going 1:01.90 in the 100 and 2:16.89 in the 200. Jackson Millard did the same in back, going 55.93 and 2:01.93.

Millard, Petrashov, Dalton Lowe and Matias Santiso delivered an impressive 200 medley relay in 1:39.85.

Louisville also got a tidy diving win thanks to Adam Sneden scoring 344.33 points on 1-meter to edge Bryden Hattie by less than four points. (Hattie and Nick Stone went 1-2 on 3-meter for the Vols.) Denis Loktev won the 200 free in 1:48.69 in a 1-2 with Murilo Sartori, who was third in the 100 free. Santiso was second in the 100 free and third in the 50.

Jordan Crooks won the 50 free for the Volunteers in 22.54. He was fourth in the 100 fly.

That event was won Martin Espernberger in 53.77 in a 1-2 with Bjoern Kammann. Espernberger also won the 200 fly in a fast 1:57.47.

Gui Caribe won the 100 free in 49.38. Landon Driggers won the 200 IM, beating Millard after he had bested him int eh 200 back.

Tennessee finished the meet by winning a sensational 400 free relay. Caribe, Kammann, Rafael Ponce de Leon and Crooks (48.85 anchor) went 3:20.49 to edge Louisville (Santiso, Loktev, Vlad Dubinin, Sartori) by .05.
