WINCHESTER, Tennessee, October 18. While the Tennessee Volunteer Class of 2015 on the men’s side definitely continues to be filled with potential diamonds, it also is one of the most intimidating in terms of physical stature. Just a few days after earning the commitment of 6-6 Kyle DeCoursey, another 6-6 former football player has chosen the Vols with Matthew Dunphy committing to head coach Matt Kredich.
Dunphy has only been swimming for two years with the Winchester Swim Team and is already on the outskirts of some strong times. He currently preps at Franklin County High School.
“I picked UT because of the amount of focus I saw there,” Dunphy told Swimming World. “I have some big goals, and I feel Tennessee will help me achieve them. The biggest moment in my career so far is when I broke a minute in the 100-yard breast for the first time at a dual meet in high school. I’m from a club with about 15 people in it, so it was a big deal for everyone.”
Dunphy has stronger long course times, but that’s just because that’s the most recent championship season for this rising star. He posted a 1:06.77 in the 100-meter breast and a 2:24.02 in the 200-meter breast this past summer.
In the spring, just a year-and-a-half into the sport, Dunphy posted a 58.16 in the 100-yard breast and a 2:06.60 in the 200-yard breast.
