Earlier today, the Tennessee and Virginia swimming and diving teams pulled out of their two-day tri-meet with Michigan set to take place at Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor on Friday and Saturday.

The Michigan swimming and diving teams have been training at Canham Natatorium this fall but there have been some issues with some chemicals in the pool.

Statement provided by Michigan swimming and diving:

“The health and safety of all competitors is always our top priority. Following previous reports of a common waterborne illness, we collaborated with the University of Michigan Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) office on a thorough set of procedures to test and clean the water at Canham Natatorium.

“Last Thursday (Oct. 10), EHS deemed the pool safe to use and the teams returned to normal training. On Tuesday (Oct. 15), following two independent lab tests, EHS reaffirmed that Canham Natatorium was safe for competition.

“Due to the schedule change, the swimming and diving program will host an intrasquad at 5 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 18) at Canham Natatorium.”

This was one of the top duel meets of the year with two of the best 100 butterflyers set to race each other for the first time since NCAAs in March with Tennessee’s Erika Brown and Michigan’s Maggie MacNeil.

Michigan (3rd), Virginia (6th) and Tennessee (8th) all finished in the top ten at women’s NCAAs last year.

My chronic lymphatic cancer has been traced to extended training as a young elite swimmer in Germany whereby chlorine was dumped in a bucket into the pool and we swam through it. A female teammate died of the same at age 45 years!

I ended up with breast cancer and know 2 or 3 from same team that had it as well. I wondered if swimming had anything to do with it.

I swam in thunder and lighting storms growing up. Wasn’t allowed out of the pool.
