NEW COMMIT: The University of Tennessee has successfully kept local product Julia Burroughs of Maryville, Tenn. in-state after receiving her verbal commitment for the fall of 2022.

She will join Regan Rathwell of Ashton, Ontario as a member of the Lady Vols’ Class of 2026.

She told Swimming World:

“I am SO excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic careers at the University of Tennessee! I am beyond thankful for my family, friends, and coaches who have supported me a long the way! GO VOLS!!!?”

No stranger to the Lady Vols’ program, Burroughs does her club swimming with Tennessee Aquatics and owns four Junior National standards. She last competed at the Southern Premier Invitational where she placed third in the 500 free, fourth in the 50/100 free, and seventh in the 200 free after finaling in the 200m free at the TYR Pro Swim Series – Knoxville.

Burroughs also raced to 12th place in the 200 free at Juniors East in December. In Summer 2019, she recorded two best times at the Southeastern LCM Championships before going on to notch 100% best times at Greensboro Futures where she placed 10th in the 200m free, 13th in the 50m free, and 14th in the 400m free.

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 23.15
  • 100 free – 50.27
  • 200 free – 1:48.65
  • 500 free – 4:50.29
  • 1000 free – 10:28.52

Currently a junior at Maryville High School, Burroughs is already a three-time individual Tennessee State Championship finalist. She was the runner-up in the 500 free and placed fourth in the 50 free as a sophomore while taking fifth in the latter during her freshman season.

Under head coach Matt Kredich, Tennessee clinched their first-ever SEC title in program history last season.
