Tennessee Aquatics Partnering with Knoxville’s West Side YMCA in Capital Campaign for New Pool
In the hopes of creating swimming success at all levels, Tennessee Aquatics is partnering with Knoxville’s West Side YMCA in their capital campaign for a brand new state-of-the-art aquatic facility in Knoxville, Tn.
According to the press release for the campaign, the YMCA, built in 1969, is the most popular Y in East Tennessee. Their mission to improve health and support members of all ages is being halted because of their lack of aquatic resources. Credited to inefficiency, the need for a new pool is seen by many.
“We’ve known for a long time that we need to expand and this will allow for a higher quality experience for our members,” Marshall Goldman, CEO of Tennessee Aquatics said. “The West Side Y has been open for 50 years and it’s definitely had a lot of Knoxvillians go through its doors, learning to swim and playing in youth sports. Now it’s time to get ready for the next 50 years.”
In order to do so, the two organizations are working with architect David Collins to improve the already-existing building and space. According to the release, the new facility will have two pools with the following goals:
- transform the current indoor pool into needed program space
- add brand new 3,000 square foot child watch center and playground
- add 85+ parking spots and driveway connection to the lower lot
- renovate mechanical systems
- update other program space
- address other needs in the Y
The new pool would not only help the Knoxville community, but also help continue the legacy of success at Tennessee Aquatics. The programs would truly range from beginner swim lessons to Olympic-level training.
“This is a win-win for everyone involved and we couldn’t be more proud of the collaboration,” said Olympic Gold Medalist Davis Tarwater, president of Tennessee Aquatics’ Executive Committee.
Matt Kredich, head swimming coach at the University of Tennessee and executive director of Tennessee Aquatics added, “This will enable us to take the next step in fulfilling our mission, which is really to help provide access to competitive swimming and its benefits to as many people as possible.”
The funds needed for the project total $8 million. So far, the campaign has raised $2.5 million including a generous donation from Pilot/Flying J. According to the YMCA, they will only spend as much as they have for the renovations, so the success of this campaign is critical in implementing all of the new plans.
